Success Stories

Mother & Daughter

"A woman worked in daycare and was offered a promotion if she could get her GED. She started classes in 2005, but stopped attending. In July 2006, she returned and began attending regularly. She had little self-esteem and would only take one section of the National GED Test at a time and only if we told her she was ready. By the time she passed four sections and only had math to go, she talked her daughter into coming to take the GED practice test.

Her daughter did very well on the practice test, but she also had low self-esteem. She took three sections of the National Test and passed them, but she studied writing and math before taking them. When they were ready, they took their remaining tests together. They stopped by on the way home. The mother stood away from everyone and asked me to speak with her. She had been crying, but her daughter was behind her smiling. Her mom hugged very tightly, thanked me and finally told me she passed. They both passed the GED! The mother was promoted. She attends computer classes when possible and stays in touch. Her daughter was hired by a local hospital right away and became a Certified Nursing Assistant. She is now taking nursing classes.

We watched their confidence grow little by little, and when they passed their tests, their heads were high and their faces beamed with pride. It is great to see a student achieve something they were afraid they could not do. Although they already have the ability, they need reassurance from someone they trust and tell them they can do it."

Mr. Brown

"One student had been a mechanic in a shop for 23 years. He came in to take the GED practice test and was nervous. He said that he had only gone to sixth grade, but that he could get a job for the city with benefits and retirement if he could get his GED. He did very well in Social Studies, Science and Reading sections on the test, but he needed to study in the Math and Writing sections and learn to write an essay.

The city manager gave him the job, but he had one year to pass the GED. He started in October 2005 and passed the National GED Test in October 2006. The pride and self-confidence he gained from his achievement made him a different person. He still stops by from time to time to say hello. He recently went on a cruise with his girlfriend in the Cayman Islands."
